Match report by Richard Church
A great result with the boys coming in to form just at the right time with the cup final coming up
next. Just shows what difference playing on a decent surface can make. The weather was pretty
decent as well – all round a very enjoyable day for team AFC.
The start of the game was pretty even with Enfield having the first effort of note with a shot from
the edge of the box but it went well over the bar. AFCs turn next – Sean was taken down while
running in to the box in the ninth minute – the resulting free kick by Joel was on target but
unfortunately straight at the keeper. A minute later and another effort from Joel as he cut in from
the left but his shot just evaded the far post. It was no surprise when the ODs took the lead on 14
minutes – the ball was played out from defence to Ollie in midfield who then passed to Sean who hit
an excellent shot giving the keeper no chance. AFC continued to press and with 19 on the clock Sim
played a lovely pass to Ollie but his chipped shot went just over the bar. Joel doubled the lead on 27
after a superb step across the ball bought himself space in the area to get his shot off.
AFC were very much in control, but the home side got back in to game following a ball in from a free
kick – it appeared a free header for their striker but it looked as though he misjudged it and it hit one
of our defenders (not sure who) and it bounced in to net for an own goal on 32 minutes. Seven
minutes later, Sean burst in to the box and as the keeper came out Sean went over him – the keeper
was raging that Sean had dived and he shoved him in the chest, causing other players to get involved
and a good old session of handbag swinging ensued. The ref agreed with the keeper about the dive
and 4 yellow cards were shown (2 for us and 2 for them).
The second half began with the visitors very much on the front foot and continuing to push for more
goals. With 5 minutes of the half gone an excellent ball from Sim across the face of the goal was met
by Sean at the far post who smashed the ball home to regain the two goal advantage. Less than a
minute later it was 4-1. Enfield took the kick off and Ollie nicked the ball back within the centre circle
and played the ball to Charlie who walloped the ball home to make it 4-1.
AFC were firmly in control and the rest of the half was played out with the lads playing keep ball and
Enfield doing a lot of chasing – a few half efforts from each team with the best falling to Enfield who
really should have scored mid-way through the half but an excellent save from Matt and then great
defensive work kept the ball out. AFC had a couple of opportunities towards the end – a swift break
from Bruce but his ball across the box went wide of the goal and with 3 minutes to go Harry showed
some lovely skill out wide and played the ball in to Bruce but he couldn’t sort his feet out to get a
shot off and the ball was cleared. With 93 on the clock Sim hit a shot straight at the keeper who
made a right hash of dealing with it and the ball bounced off him and in to the net to make it 5-1.
Man of the match (as decided by the AFC committee) could have been any one of a number of
players, but in spite of the scoreline, we went for a defender - Shawn Joseph.
