AFC Dunstable 1-2 Biggleswade FC

AFC Dunstable 1-2 Biggleswade FC

26th AUGUST 2024

Coming in to this game on the back of a 3 game winning run, confidence was pretty high but unfortunately the run came to an end with a deserved victory for Biggleswade.

AFC started very much on the front foot with 3 opportunities to take the lead in the first five minutes. The first one was a shot across the box from Sean, following a lovely one two on 3 minutes. Next, a defence splitting through ball to Kyle B saw his shot saved down low by the visiting keeper. From the resulting corner, Romeo’s header went straight in to the grateful keepers arms.

AFC were made to rue those missed chances as the visitors slowly but surely started to take control of the game and took the lead on 15 minutes with a well taken penalty by Daniel Bond sending Finn the wrong way. Twenty minutes later, Biggleswade doubled their lead. Finn had got down well to push a shot away for a corner. The corner was really well struck and the unmarked Lawrie Marsh at the far post headed the ball back in to the opposite corner of the net.

We lost Phoenix with 4 minutes of the half left with what looked like a nasty injury and he was replaced by George. In the final minute of the half, Sean received the ball in the box with his back towards the goal – he controlled the ball really well but as he tried to turn, he was nudged off the ball by the covering defender. Final chance of the half went to the visitors when a ball in to the box saw an excellent tackle by Romeo on the 6 yard line who then cleared the ball to safety.

2-0 Biggleswade at half time.

Two changes for AFC at half time with Kwad replacing Romeo and Russell on for Harrison. Again, AFC started the brighter and created a number of chances – a Tom B shot flashed wide, a superb ball into the box from Kyle L that no one could get on the end of, a header from Kyle B straight at the keeper and a nice volley from Russell that went narrowly wide. Biggleswade had an excellent opportunity to add to the score with 25 minutes of the half gone. Amir Hadi took the ball round Finn and Finn hooked his legs for what looked like a nailed on penalty but the ref played advantage as the ball had fallen to Lee Northfield who’s shot was then blocked on the line – complaints all round from the visitors for that one!

Four minutes later, AFC reduced the deficit with a superbly struck shot from Sean making it 2-1. It took a bit of a deflection but a lovely effort in spite of that. AFC were then in the ascendency and continued to take the game to Biggleswade and created a number of chances with efforts from Ernest that went straight at the keeper, a long shot from Kyle Lynch that ended up well wide and a last minute scramble that the keeper eventually blocked on the goal-line.

Biggleswade were mighty relieved to hear the whistle. They deserved the points overall but a very decent performance from AFC – particularly the last 15 minutes or so.

MOM voted by the committee was Kyle Lynch.
