AFC Dunstable 1-0 AFC Sudbury
AFC Dunstable 1-0 AFC Sudbury
31st AUGUST 2024
We welcomed AFC Sudbury (in a very bright pink strip!), who play at step three for this potentially very difficult game in the F.A. cup and what a fantastic performance and result for the OD’s after a pretty even and tense match!
Sudbury started much the brighter and were the far better team in the first thirty minutes with several opportunities to take the lead but a mix of poor finishing and good defending kept them out. Even though they were on top, Finn had no real saves to make, but his handling and positioning were excellent.
AFC came back in to the game as the half wore on but created very little up top until five minutes before the end of the half – Finn made a superb save and started a counterattack with the ball very quickly moving to the other end of the pitch – we got a shot off but it was relatively easily smothered by the keeper to snuff out the danger.
Half time 0-0.
The second half started in very much the same way as the first with the visitors creating plenty of opportunities but unable to convert – four chances were noted but they all came and went – the most spectacular one being a shot that not only cleared the crossbar, but also the fence behind the goal – we’re still looking for the ball that I think landed somewhere on the BMX track!
Against the run of play, we were delighted to go one up with twenty minutes of the half gone with a thunderous shot by Kwad from quite some distance. The visitors keeper had no chance and he hardly had time to move as the ball rocketed past him in to the top right corner of the net – a superb strike to give us a 1-0 lead.
We had to dig in deep to maintain the lead and some excellent game management and a little bit of housery saw the game out with AFC in to the hat for the next round where we will face our old foes Biggleswade FC away from home, but no matter, We’re on our way to Wembley, we shall not be moved, Que Sera Sera and all that!
A superb effort from all involved. MOM voted by the committee was goalkeeper Finn Purcell.
