Aylesbury United 1 AFC Dunstable 3
Aylesbury United 1-3 AFC Dunstable
Saturday 25th January 2025
Having lost our previous four league games, we travelled to The Meadow more in hope than
expectation and came away with a very welcome victory against a team that we do not have a great
record against away from home.
AFC had the first effort early in the game, but Khyan’s shot was well wide of the target – a bright
start but Aylesbury slowly but surely started to take control of the game and had a few decent pot
shots but they were well dealt with by Matt.
Against the run of play, we took the lead on 31 minutes with an absolute pearler of a goal from
Sean. He picked the ball up just outside the area and hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the
box giving the home keeper absolutely no chance of getting anywhere near it. A superb goal to put
us 1-0 up going in to the break.
AFC started the second half taking the game to Aylesbury and were unlucky not to go further ahead
following some lovely approach play but Charlie hit his shot just wide of the goal. As good as Sean’s
first half goal was, he surpassed it on 51 minutes with a very similar effort to his first one to put us 2-
0 up.
Once again, Aylesbury took the ascendancy but with no real clear cut chances – again Matt and his
defence coped extremely well with anything thrown at them. With 64 gone, we should have sewn
the game up when we were awarded a penalty. Sean stepped up for hopefully his hat trick but the
keeper got down well to make a decent save.
It was a little bit end to end at this stage – Joel Anker had come on for his debut earlier in the half
and was unlucky not to score on 68 with a shot that the keeper parried and grabbed at the second
attempt. A minute later, Aylesbury should have scored when Kwad slipped in the box allowing the
home striker a free shot but Matt pulled off another good save. Just after that, Charlie made a run
through the middle and as the keeper came rushing out, Charlie chipped him with lovely technique
but the ball struck the post and away to safety – so unlucky.
A series of substitutions saw Harry come on for Shawn but he only lasted 4 minutes before he was
forced off with an injury and we had another debut from Simone Troso.
With 6 minutes of the 90 left, Aylesbury got back in to the game following a poor challenge in
midfield which led to a breakaway that saw a very decent finish from Kian Henry to halve the deficit.
As we went in to 5 minutes added, we should have scored from a Joel effort but the keeper did well
as he rushed out to gather the ball. Hearts in mouths when Matt went down in what looked an
innocuous challenge but he could not carry on and with all 5 subs having been made, Russell took
over in goal. Matt was down for a good few minutes so we had no idea how long was left for us to
hang on but we need not have worried as with 99 minutes showing on the clock we broke away and
following some lovely control in the box, the ball fell to Bruce who tucked the ball away to put us 3-1
up. The ref blew the whistle as soon as the game restarted.
An excellent team performance and a big well done to the whole team.
MOM as voted by the committee was Sean Duodu.
