Ware 2 AFC Dunstable 2
Ware FC 2-2 AFC Dunstable
14th December 2024
An absolute brilliant end to a match saw AFC come away with a point from a game where we rarely
get anything.
The match started with the home side very much on the front foot and taking the game to the
visitors. It was no surprise that they took an early lead with just 6 minutes on the clock – a close in
shot from their number 2, Stefanos Georgiou wrong footing Matt in goal.
AFC were seeing plenty of the ball but not really making any inroads towards the Ware goal. Plenty
of possession and passing but mostly in our own half. Ware doubled their lead on 24 minutes – some
really good play down the right wing from Theo Ofori (he had a really good game and was always a
threat) saw the ball played in – the initial shot was well saved by Matt but unfortunately for us the
ball fell straight to their number 8, Gucci Soulya-Osekanongo who couldn’t really miss and he
slammed the ball home.
AFC were not being outplayed and worked hard to try and get back in the game – a couple of
speculative shots were fired in but did not really trouble their keeper. The game really came to life
for us in a 2 minute spell with 7 minutes of the half to go but ultimately with no reward. Ollie was
tripped in the box for a definite penalty but a poor effort from Kyle Brooks was comfortably saved by
the keeper. A minute later we really should have scored – the ball was twice cleared off the line (the
second one looked to have crossed the line but was not given) and as the ball was cleared, Rico hit a
superb shot that the keeper got the slightest touch on to deflect it on to the bar. So unlucky to not
have scored and we went in to the break 2-0 down.
The second half started with a bit of a pass and move exhibition with neither team really threatening
to add to the scoreline. AFC made a number of changes relatively early in the half with Sean, Tali,
Tommy and Harry entering the field albeit in some unexpected roles – Tali seemed to be the
lynchpin in midfield and Harry playing up top!! Fair play to JT as the subs ultimately made the
difference.
There were just 3 minutes left on the clock when Rico scored for us – his first shot was blocked but
as it came back to him, he hit an absolute rocket to get us back in the game and get Ware rattled.
Definitely game on.
From the kick off Ware punted the ball forward and was easily picked up by Matt in goal. As he
rolled the ball out, AFC very confidently and assuredly without any hint of panic or desperation
moved the ball up the pitch. The 11 th pass of the move (yes, I counted them on the video!) was
played in to Tali who had his back to goal who then somehow turned and spun while taking a couple
of touches with absolute precision and played an exquisite ball in to the box to Harry who put the
ball away with a superb finish, to the delight of his team-mates and everyone on the bench.
Tommy’s celebration is well worth watching if you’ve not seen it!
There were still a couple of minutes left and a few minutes added but Ware had had the wind well
and truly knocked out of their sails and were left wondering how they did not pick up all 3 points. It
was all worth it for all of us from AFC as those couple of minutes were a sight to see. Once again, a
great team performance.
